The Witcher Adventure Game unveiled in both digital and physical versions

Fantasy Flight Games are coordinating with CD Projekt RED, the makers of the excellent Witcher series of RPGs, on a new digital-and-physical title called The Witcher Adventure Game.

The game features the four most iconic characters from The Witcher universe, including the main character Geralt, sorceress Triss Merigold, dwarven leader Yarpen Zigrin and the bard Dandelion. Gameplay involves generating quests, moving around the board, slaying monsters (or even using diplomacy, sometimes) and competing (or possibly cooperating) with each other for victory.

According to the official website, the game will contain “oodles of quest cards” ranging from “monster hunting to exposing a traitor in the royal court”. Here’s a quick blurb:

The Witcher Adventure Game encourages a range of playstyles – different characters will tend to use alternate means to achieve their goals. You can bring enemies around to your point of view with a sword as Geralt – or bribe them with gold and threaten to call on powerful friends as Dandelion. If a situation calls for strength in numbers, Yarpen has his own fellowship of dwarves to command, and Triss can rely on her expert skill with magic to save the day. You can choose from any of the four characters: Geralt of Rivia, Dandelion, Triss Merigold and Yarpen Zigrin.

Each character has unique abilities and their own deck of Development Cards. As a result, each time you play you can discover something new by trying out varied characters and experimenting with different builds. For example, when playing as Geralt of Rivia, the main hero of the Witcher franchise, you can develop your character either by specializing in brewing and utilizing combat Elixirs, or else by growing your ability to cast powerful Witcher Signs.

Ignacy Trzewiczek, creator of board games such as Stronghold, 51st State and Robinson Crusoe is the designer on this title.

Digital version now in closed beta testing

Customers who have pre-ordered the third title in The Witcher trilogy, The Wild Hunt, will get priority access to the beta of the digital version which is now in closed testing.

You can pre-order that from GOG.com here, but if you’d rather get in on the cheap, you can visit the GOG Galaxy site and put your name down there. GOG Galaxy is a new multiplayer service being build by GOG.com, and The Witcher Adventure Game will be the first title to use it.

Check out the trailer below — it’s for the digital version, but with a little bit of the power of imagination you should be able to see how it’ll translate to the physical one.
