D&D 5E’s new storyline sends players into the Underdark alongside Drizzt

If you mention the words Dungeons & Dragons often enough you will inevitably and accidentally summon Drizzt Do’Urden, the dark elf ranger from R.A. Salvatore’s books who inspired legions of brooding Faerunian anti-heroes, endless in-jokes about special snowflakes and Mary Sues, and who taught us all the valuable lesson that your mother doesn’t always know best (and in fact sometimes, she is irredeemably evil and needs to die).

Now, perhaps unsurprisingly, Drizzt is back — appearing in Rage of Demons, the third of D&D 5E‘s adventure storylines. Announced yesterday, Rage of Demons will come in two parts and take players from level 1 to 15 as they venture into the Underdark alongside Drizzt to discover why so many demon lords have been summoned from the Abyss.

Rage of Demons will transport characters to the deadly and insane underworld. Rumors of powerful demon lords such as Demogorgon, Orcus and Graz’zt terrorizing the denizens of the Underdark have begun to filter up to the cities of the Sword Coast. The already dangerous caverns below the surface are thrown into ultimate chaos, madness and discord. The renegade drow Drizzt Do’Urden is sent to investigate but it will be up to you to aid in his fight against the demons before he succumbs to his darker temptations.

Neverwinter MMO and Sword Coast Legends

Rage of Demons will also carry over into the Neverwinter MMO, where players will enter Menzoberrenzan alongside Drizzt, as well as take part in quests written by R.A. Salvatore.

This expansion will initially be released on PC, following later on Xbox One.

Wizards also explain that the upcoming Sword Coast Legends video game (watch the latest footage here) will tie into Rage of Demons, and that “the epic campaign that drives Sword Coast Legends‘ story forces players deep into the Underdark and continues well after launch with legendary adventurer Drizzt Do’Urden.”

Green Ronin Publishing to contribute

The first book in Rage of Demons is Out of the Abyss, which is a joint project between Green Ronin Publishing and Wizards, following in the same pattern of Tyranny of Dragons which was a joint project with Kobold Press. Here’s the blurb for Out of the Abyss, which arrives on September 15:

The Underdark is a subterranean wonderland, a vast and twisted labyrinth where fear reigns. It is the home of horrific monsters that have never seen the light of day. It is here that the dark elf Gromph Baenre, Archmage of Menzoberranzan, casts a foul spell meant to ignite a magical energy that suffuses the Underdark and tears open portals to the demonic Abyss. What steps through surprises even him, and from that moment on, the insanity that pervades the Underdark escalates and threatens to shake the Forgotten Realms to its foundations. Stop the madness before it consumes you!

The recent Elemental Evil adventure brought with it a whole slew of new free races and spells to all D&D players, so it’s a very exciting time even if you don’t intend on picking up the Rage of Demons adventure.
